Monies
Copenhagen, Denmark
Bold in form, innovative in materials, and sensational in scale, Monies creates jewelry with an emphasis on globally sourced materials. Featuring organic shapes and memorable materials, each of their pieces feels artifactual, as though they carry a history within them.
Danish couple Gerda and Nikolai Monies started Monies in 1973. Although both are classically trained goldsmiths, in fact, they met during training, it was their interest and love for unconventional natural materials and oversized avant garde jewelry that led them to found their company. They make their signature sculptural and artistic jewelry out of their workshop overlooking the Copenhagen harbor, where their two sons Karl and Niels Monies have also become involved in the family business.
Monies is now international with their own stores in Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Rome and Istanbul. They have collaborated with high-profile brands including Chanel, Donna Karan, and Christian Lacroix. In 2019 they were awarded the Brand of the Year award at the Elle Style Awards.
Opulent colors, distinctive textures, and striking style define Monies’ pieces. The designers emphasize the innate beauty of their sensational and often rare materials that include horn, bone, wood, leather, coral, fossils, shells, crystals, seeds, and semi-precious stones. Their modern aesthetic creates a dramatic balance between art and nature, as well as ideas of new and ancient, refinement and rawness, and organic and geometric.
