Maku Textiles

Kolkata, India

Maku Textiles is an experimental fashion company based in Kolkata. Founded in 2012, Maku Textiles is led by founder-director Santanu Das, an alumni of National Institute of Design. Working with Jamdani weavers from West Bengal, Maku Textiles’ fabric is handwoven and handspun by artisans who create handmade designs presented in small collections.

Showcasing the richness and versatility of indigo, from the palest powder blue to black, Maku garments are produced using organic textiles and indigenous practices. Maku Textiles are inherently intimate pieces, inviting the wearer to engage all of the senses.

Highlighting India’s textile history of Khadi as an emblem of human skill and sensitivity towards material resources, Santanu deliberately incorporates perceived imperfection into design details through the use of reverse buttons and various printing and dyeing techniques.

Maku Textiles made an international splash when Santanu designed a dress for Payal Kapadia’s Cannes 2024 outfit, which she wore to receive the Grand Prix Award for the film All We Imagine As Light.
