Alonpi: A Melting Pot of World Cultures

Alonpi, best known for their design and printing skill set, continually surprise us with each season. As the only people in the world with the capability to print on both sides of cashmere, creative forces Piero and Alfredo are in a league of their own. Each element, from the softness of the cashmere to the patterns and the colors chosen, is a testament to Alonpi’s expertise.

In the process of creating the most textural and visually dynamic pieces available, Alonpi has incorporated inspiration from historic and ancient civilizations. Ornate patterns found on Alonpi’s scarves mirror others already in existence, from painted doors in Morocco to tiled walls once constructed in Persia. Even the elaborate archways in Iran can be said to influence Alonpi’s prints. Repetitive circles on Alonpi’s scarves in Mikado and Nikit Blue resemble zellige tilework, which are stunning tessellated patterns found on mosque walls around the world.

Using inspiration from motifs in different areas of the world, Alonpi has essentially crafted a collection that is a melting pot of world cultures. This can be said about their influences as well, as even the illustrations on doorways in Morocco were not created by a singular entity. Geometric patterns vary from one building to the next, created by those Jewish and Muslim alike. It is thanks to these multi-cultural influences that Alonpi’s designs remain the strongest they have ever been.

Inspiration For the Shoot

The dramatic texture of the collection had us searching for a rugged environment in which the earth’s colors melted into dynamic compositions. We found the perfect inspiration in Australia’s Blue Mountains, a rugged region west of Sydney in New South Wales. This special place brought to light the earthy color combinations of F Cashmere and the textures of their lightweight, lofty yarns.

The company has experienced tremendous growth and many awards for its unusual use of cashmere and for the evolving style developed for each of the four fashion seasons. In addition to the mens’ and womens’ collections, Avant Toi launched its first exclusive home goods collection in 2017. The use of hand painting and specialty weaving, iconic features of the brand, was central to the design of blankets, covers, pillows and carpets. Beyond this, there were many elements of design that transformed the house into a magical haven. Avant Toi experimented with their passion to match and blend materials to create hand-made pieces. Over the course of a year, Avant Toi’s home goods gained enormous attention, leading to the creation of an Avant Toi Home Boutique in Milan in April of 2018. This year, at the Salone de Mobile design week in Milan, Avant Toi received further recognition for the company’s otherworldly approach to home goods design. Please join us for a fantastical experience of Avant Toi’s work with Fiorella Ghignone, company owner and director.

By Walid: A Hundred Flowers

BY WALID

By Walid is the creative, upcycle brand of Walid al Damirji… an intellect and free-thinker with the best attitude of anyone on the planet. These jackets were born of a delightful June visit to his studio in London where Walid, John (Walid’s right-hand man) and I unravelled old textiles onto a large center table and set out to create a mini collection for Santa Fe Dry Goods. The jackets are made from antique fabrics, many from old piano shawls. The motifs resonate with the work from the same period of painter Ju Lian, featured below. – Shobhan

About the Art of Ju Lian

A native of Panyu, Ju Lian was a bird-and-flower painter who emphasized the importance of the observation and sketching of objects in nature. He learnt painting from Song Guangbao (active in early 19th Century) and Meng Jinyi and developed his own style. His palette was vivid, rich and bright. This particular piece entitled “A Hundred Flowers” is considered a masterpiece among his work and is revered for the zhuangfen and zhuangshui, or “water and pigment infusion” method that he used. Ju Lian painted without outlines and deposited water and pigment onto the wet paint surface. The water then dried to form a clearly defined boundary similar to an outline. This painting is one of the best examples of this technique and resonated with the embroideries of these By Walid jackets. They are opulent and colorful art pieces that stand the test of time in fashion and yet seem modern in many ways. So too does Ju Lian’s incredible painting.
