Sabina Savage takes inspiration from all over the world as she creates extraordinary narratives that tell imaginative and detailed stories about the lives of animals both great and small. The Naturalist's Handbook focuses on Alfred Swift, a botanical and zoological artist that is thrown into an adventure and given the task of traveling across rural America, when a fellow zoologist goes missing. The illustrations also reference Victorian zoological and botanical illustrators and the Fraktur folk art movement from 19th century America.

"The riverbanks were still and serene. The buzzing of a dragonfly the only sound, until the startled call of the Great Blue Heron. Disguised by the dappled, watery reflections, the albino Alligator had fooled the bird into landing on his back. The river is his empire, and the riverbed a shrine to those who took one wrong step." – Sabina Savage, The Naturalist's Handbook
