Mirrors like the ones in this pillow, are used in tribal embroidery and are traditionally made from hand-blown artisan glass. Artisans in Kapadvanj, Gujarat, are still producing mirrors using a method first developed by the ancient Romans. Handmade glass has many imperfections: bubbles, lines and cracks. The irregularities add character and are much sought after being embroiderers. The tendency of these mirrors to turn darker as the metals oxidize together with imperfections of the glass itself has led them to be referred to as "black glass". The rationale for the use of mirrors is consistent across many tribal communities - they are primarily auspicious and defensive. Mirrors ward off the evil eye, reflecting it back on the sender.
Vintage and antique textiles have experienced a full life before making their way to our stores. A vintage item of exceptional quality should not be viewed as brand new, as it shows signs of a lifetime, or several, being used and appreciated by its original makers. Evidence of this well-lived life may be visible in slightly distressed fabric, loose threads, small tears, non-standard sizes and other unique imperfections.
