Biek Verstappen

Amsterdam, the netherlands

Just outside the heart of Amsterdam is Biek Verstappen’s atelier, located in an industrial shed dating back to 1939. Biek works from instinct, creating textiles exclusively from natural fibers such as raw silk, bamboo, angora, camel, yak and a multitude of wools.

Biek hand dyes her fabrics in a painterly manner, influenced by her artist mother. With her team of just seven people, she creates both menswear and womenswear in small batches. All clothing and pattern design, dyeing, sewing and finishing is done in house. Beloved for her approach to clothing as both wearable object and devotional craft, Biek has earned an ardent global audience.

Biek describes her pieces as “handmade garments that evoke distant memories in contemporary time.” Saturated in the rich hues of nature, each piece is made and dyed by Biek and her small team. Biek uses the highest quality natural raw materials from Europe, sourcing hemp from Belgium and linen from Ireland. Throughout Biek’s dyeing process, each fiber reacts differently to the dye, resulting in an organic, textured and singular fabric. This textural landscape is an expression of Biek’s ethos as well as a reflection of the diversity in nature itself.
