Pleats Please: Fashion in Motion

Issey Miyake Pleats Please Poncho and Pants

Made from single pieces of fabric, the innovation behind Pleats Please is that the clothes are first cut and sewn together three times larger than the finished garments. They are then hand-fed into a heat press between two sheets of paper. The garment emerges with permanent pleats, enabling both texture and form to be created at the same time. The vertical, horizontal and zig-zag pleating is used to create varying effects and architectural shapes. Comfortable and beautiful, Pleats Please reflects Issey Miyake’s fundamental concept that “design is not for philosophy, but for life,” and continues to evolve today.

Issey Miyake has won many awards for the design of Pleats Please: Good Design’s Long Life Design Special Award in 2013, The Japan Institute of Design Award, and is a three-time winner of the NY ADC Gold Award. Several years ago, Pleats Please was featured among “the greatest brands of our time” at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum for a ‘Fashion in Motion’ live catwalk event. Enjoy our Pleats Please collection in motion!
