The Banjara, an ethnic group composed of semi-nomadic tribes found throughout the Indian subcontinent, are renowned for their highly colorful textiles. The Banjara technique is unique in India and celebrates the strength of the women who practice it. Banjara embroidery almost never contains figurative motifs such as flowers, animals or human forms, instead using a variety of stitches not often found in other folk embroideries. Embellished with mirrors, shells and intricate embroidery, Banjara work displays a surprisingly modern aesthetic.
Zari, or jari, is a thread traditionally made of fine gold or silver used in traditional Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani garments, especially as brocade in saris. Zari is woven into fabrics, primarily silk, to make intricate patterns and elaborate designs of embroidery called zardozi.
Vintage and antique textiles have experienced a full life before making their way to our stores. A vintage item of exceptional quality should not be viewed as brand new, as it shows signs of a lifetime, or several, being used and appreciated by its original makers. Evidence of this well-lived life may be visible in slightly distressed fabric, loose threads, small tears, non-standard sizes and other unique imperfections.
