Astier de Villatte

Renowned for their signature approach to handmade ceramics, Benoît Astier de Villatte and Ivan Pericoli have been designing home goods since 1996. Benoît and Ivan met while attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The designers are united in their interest in the imperfect elements of ceramics, eschewing the push for machine manufactured perfection and embracing the oddities and impurities inherent in handmade.

The original Astier de Villatte shop is located in Paris’ 1st arrondissement, in an antique workshop historically home to Napoleon Bonaparte’s silversmith. The successor to Parisian ceramics manufacturers such as the illustrious Pont-aux-Choux, Astier de Villatte is now the one and only major studio to keep the tradition of artisanal ceramic production in Paris alive while welcoming the global reality of our ever-changing world. Benoît and Ivan’s team of twenty ceramicists are mostly Buddhist monastery trained Tibetans. All the pieces are hand-formed and display historical and natural motifs (as in the Robinson collection of bas relief herbs and grasses) with a bit of whimsy.

The result is a collection of coveted ceramic curiosities, complete with quirky details embracing their one-of-a-kind beauty. Astier de Villatte remains one of the most interesting modern brands through their extraordinary skill to reinterpret techniques and aesthetics from the past by imbuing them with modern sensibilities and composition for a truly curated experience like no other.
