A Tentative Atelier
HONG KONG, CHINA
Exploring the dynamic tension between delicate handicraft and artistic elegance, A Tentative Atelier pieces harness luxury with a distinctly Victorian flair. Their collections marry irregular hems, tonal stitching, collage patchwork, Edwardian florals and translucent overlays. This variety results in a rich tapestry of innovative silhouettes with a centrally romantic aesthetic.
After graduating from the Hong Kong Design Institute and wetting their feet in fashion houses across Europe, designer duo Nam Tsang and Pauline Yuen founded A Tentative Atelier in 2012 as a platform to encourage and sustain the spirit of high-quality craftsmanship in fashion. Pauline was awarded an Italy Vogue Talent Award in 2014, complete with a master’s scholarship to Milan’s prestigious Domus Academy. The following year Nam won Perspective’s 40 Under 40 award for outstanding design sensibility. Based between Milan, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, their brand is known for being the last generation of Shanghai Artisans. Their team of professional tailors and machinists boast over 40 years of experience in the garment industry.
A Tentative Atelier’s designs converse directly with conceptual art, music and film. Historical references and sensibilities permeate their garments. Each piece is handcrafted with lavish, natural fabrics that maintain a raw and ageless quality. Contrasting enhancements in synthetic materials and metals draw the collection into the contemporary realm, and ensure there is a delightful surprise to discover within every piece.
