Designer Profile - Monies
Monies jewelry is bold in form, innovative in materials, and sensational in scale. The Danish couple Gerda and Nikolai Monies met in 1973, while they were both attending school for goldsmithing. Since then, they have been living and working together making their signature sculptural and artistic jewelry. Working out of their workshop that overlooks the Copenhagen harbor, they elevate jewelry design to wearable sculpture by boldly playing with volume, form, color, and negative space.
Gerda and Nikolai are both experts in their field. Gerda was the first woman to be accepted into Denmark’s 700 year old Goldsmith’s Guild. She has studied all over the globe, including Denmark, Germany, England, Asia, and the United States. Nikolai, a trained silversmith and goldsmith, travels the world in search of exquisite, unique materials, such as antique jade and wood carvings.
The Monies couple emphasizes the innate beauty of their globally sourced natural materials, such as horn, bone, wood, leather, coral, fossils, shells, crystals, seeds, and semi-precious stones. Many of the elements have an artifactual feel, as if the pieces themselves carry history within them. This, combined with their fresh and modern aesthetic, creates a dramatic balance between art and nature, new and ancient, refinement and rawness, and organic and geometric.
